  •  My first "gay wedding" (14+ / 0-)

I was 10.  We spent our summers then on Fire Island.  At a community founded by my great-grandfather and other members of the Chataqua Institute in the 19th century.  There was a lot of Capture the Flag and singing around the piano and beach picnics and so forth.

Some miles down the beach was Cherry Grove, which I was not supposed to visit.

But I was 10,  and one day I wandered down the beach and up over the walkway and had a visit.

When I was 10, there was nothing I wanted so much as a pocketbook.

And when I was exploring Cherry Grove, I saw a sign that said "leather" and thought, "finally! I can get my pocketbook."  So even though I was in my bathing suit and a t-shirt and did not have money with me, I thought I would look around and pick one and then go back when I had money.

The leather store did not seem to have much in the way of pocketbooks, but I asked the man behind the counter if he had any.

He was extremely kind and tried to explain that the store did not have that kind of leathergoods in stock.

Meanwhile, behind the counter, a ceremony was being held in a courtyard.  There was music and two men holding hands.

They were both wearing caftans.  I remember thinking that everyone looked very nice and happy.

I also remember that everyone was very sweet to me and that the nice man behind the counter suggested that I come back another day and also suggested that maybe another store would have the pocketbook I desired.

    I suppose that was so.
