No one who associates with a particular group wants to see that group insulted.

Not everyone associated with a group, however, interprets criticism of their group as necessarily a bad thing. A good example would be those Democrats who are not happy with the direction the party appears to be heading versus those who support Obama regardless, and interpret criticism of his policies as an insult to the man, some of whom go so far as to extend that perceived insult to him as an insult to them.

I see a similar phenomenon here. To my eyes, "Catholic-bashing" as you call it, is actually, on the whole, "Catholic Church-criticizing." I'm sure there have been instances where wording has been sloppy enough to make these types of comments/diaries appear more personal than they should have been...Closer to "all Catholics are bad, even you" than to "the Catholic Church as an institution has done some bad things." I will agree that this is just as unfair a stroke of a broad brush as any other over-generalization is.

Yet we, myself included, do this sort of thing when it comes to Republicans, all day, every day. Not all Republicans are evil, but the ones who are in office, and those who enable them by continuing to vote them back into office, certainly leave a little to be desired.

That said, bashing the Catholic Church was not on my agenda for the next couple of days, or thereafter, actually. That's not to say I won't direct valid criticism where it belongs...to the Church, not to Catholics such as yourself.

Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.
