    What a dim world it would be without philosophy, music, and literature.

    And it's not a life of poverty to major in one of those.  English majors often go on to become lawyers, librarians, college instructors, editors, proofreaders, high school teachers, etc.

      Unfortunately, lots also go onto food service, retail and cab driving.  I fervently wish that it were otherwise.

      My observations of the friends of my children demonstrate the above to me too amply.

      Obtaining a skill that is valued in the job marketplace does not have to make following an interest in music or the arts simultaneously impossible.

      My advice...fortunately, my children accepted this device and hence are doing quite well financially...was to follow all of their interests but to have a good  and in demand skill to take to the job/professional workplace when all was said and done.
