Anyone who's familiar with modern-day German knows how much the country has invested in coming to terms with its Nazi past.  There's even a word for it in German -- Vergangenheitsbewältigung.

In school, Germans are taught about their country's horrific role in the Holocaust and about its responsibility for World War II.  These are not issues that are open to debate.  Indeed, German law even makes Holocaust denial a crime.

We could learn a lot from Germany's efforts to admit and atone for its past.
