about twice a year. Not just around the ankles, but they like it behind the knee, on the upper thighs, around the waist, in the armpits, on the belly, on the back and I have had them on my balls. It ain't fun. Not only do they seem to like me, I seem to have an allergic reaction to them, untreated, it gets ugly and I have scars around my ankles to prove it.

The best advice in this diary is strip and get in the shower immediately upon getting home. Don't wait for a case of the itchies to send you to the shower, then it's too late. Do your stripping in front of the washing machine, if you're wearing athletic shoes, throw them in too. If your shoes or boots are leather, you'll need to spray them with pesticide or insect repellant. Do Not Ever Wear Anything Again Without Washing First. Consider your clothes saturated with the buggers - they are. Don't sit anywhere in the house before you visit the washing machine.

I have never tried nail polish, and don't intend to start. On first indication I have bites, I use 1% hydrocortisone cream (not ointment). Use it early, use it often. It is very effective, it will almost eliminate itching, and it seems to increase the rate of healing.

    To summarize:

    1. Wash Everything
    2. Shower
    3. 1% Hydrocortisone cream
