  •  Mars Mission/Mars Colony (8+ / 0-)

I think we should focus on Mars missions and colonization as a society at the expense of starting more wars. I doubt, however, that there is much public backing for such a program. My guess is that some of the early Martian colonies will fail and Martian settlers will die, perhaps horribly. This will really sour any favorable public sentiment to such missions. In reality, I think with the way people currently view government spending, any Mars program will be private (corporate) backed.

If that happens, it will make Heinlein half right.  Musk will be the Man who sold Mars, not The Man Who Sold the Moon.

Public funds for the space program.

It's mostly predicated on a false belief that NASA is a huge drain on the federal budget (in fact, it only costs tenths of a penny for every dollar in the federal budget).

But space funds get hit from conservatives who either see the money as a potential tax cut being spent on a "big government" program that should be done by the private sector, or for some religious conservatives they see space as something man isn't meant to meddle with.

On the other side, some liberals see the NASA space budget as pork to defense contractors or money that's being taken out of the mouths of the poor, and argue "let's solve the problems here before going out there."

So anytime NASA's funding becomes vulnerable, it get hits from both sides.
