  •  Aren't fossil fuels just old terrestrial sinks? (1+ / 0-)

If converted to bio-char by pyrolysis the current sinks might, in theory, be stabilized and become semi-permanent.

If the carbon in the sinks returns to the atmosphere much more slowly than it returns, the increased uptake might buy us some time to strike a better bargain with the devil.

Holistic land management might potentially have such an effect for soils. Vast quantities of carbon have been released from soils due to tillage, erosion, and other land management practices. (Fun factoid, New England soils didn't become rocky until about the time of Independence. Until then, the stones were buried in deep humus.) Perhaps these soils can be restored.

    •  Yes, that's true, but... (1+ / 0-)

Better land management can sequester more carbon in soils and we need to do that, but Dr. Hansen is saying there will be MORE carbon in the system, so when the climate impacts the sinks, there will be more carbon released to the atmosphere.  In other words, the extra terrestrial uptake of carbon looks good at first, but it is just setting us up for a bigger fall.

that climate changes will destroy all the sinks? Does Hansen say this?
