    •  Agreed. More about inability to handle rejection? (6+ / 0-)

According to one article: "The girl who was targeted had been the girlfriend of one of the suspect's and had mocked him on the school bus."

So, this may be more a story of a boy unable to handle rejection -- and emulating the violent misogyny of adults (his father? brother? grandfather? Rush Limbaugh? TV/YouTube?)? Of course, the real underlying story is their families' failures as parents. And the failure of our society (school, neighbors, friends, church, courts, police, social workers, etc.) in allowing this to go as far as it did -- though also huge credit to the student who turned them in, and the teachers who followed through!

This story is deeply disturbing, on so many counts. It serves as a reminder of so many things wrong with America. We look at terrible incidents overseas, e.g. of 'mercy-killings,' lashings, etc. To help us get some perspective on just how wrong things are at home, imagine how this looks to a foreign audience. How would you explain this to them?

When I was 10 or 11 we still didn't even really like girls (or at least we pretended we didn't, except maybe at Valentine's, when it was just a silly card). What are 11-yo's doing having a 'girlfriend,' and being able to think of committing rape? And murder?? This boggles the mind.
