  •  It has to stink (8+ / 0-)

around there - literally: crude oil is very pungent.

(Is it time for the pitchforks and torches yet?)

    •  "About like asphalt" (8+ / 0-)

The county executive there is in full apologia mode:

      From Yahoo News:

Allen Dodson, Faulkner County judge who is the top executive for the county where the spill occurred, told Reuters in an interview on Sunday that the smell of crude was less potent on Sunday as cleanup efforts continued, saying it was weaker than the smell of fresh asphalt laid on a road.
Nothing to worry about. Just like having your street repaved. But anyone who has spent any time around a refinery area or drill rig knows better. Those houses are going to smell like oil for years. They are unsellable and perhaps even too toxic to safely live in. But the county executive is trying to soft peddle the whole thing. And they are barring news crews from access to the spill as they did in Louisiana at the behest of BP. It tells you a lot when governments won't allow reporting of an incident.
    •  And this isn't light sweet crude oil either. (9+ / 0-)

It's oil from tar sands containing benzene and who knows what else.
I don't know if people will be able to live in those houses anymore.

Check the link in the story about wabasca crude; it has a chemical analysis.  It's very "sour", over 4% sulfur, about ten times what low-sulfur "sweet" crude has.  Plus it has a relatively low percentage in the lighter distillates (decane and down), and thus presumably more in the heavier end. And lots of the other bad stuff.  This liquified bitumen is nastier than real crude oil.
