...Shockwave and I have kosmailed about this. What is it? The fact that the radical GOP we see today vs. the much more moderate GOP of the past, was actually hatched in California (the very southern suburban counties south of L.A. and the northern counties of California...like where I live).

The Tea Party tries out various things to see if the memes they through out there will stick with their base. In the last election cycle Doug LaMalfa said stuff like if a women has an abortion she'll get with breast cancer.

This, it turned out, was just too much even for Tea Party folks to take...so he took that off the table as a GOP talking point. They test these crazy talking points in counties in California...like where I live...because they have NO chance of losing no matter what they say. And if you think this isn't important to the GOP to have these incubators hidden away in "a liberal state like California," think again. They hide in plain site because the DNC doesn't pay attention. The DNC never puts up any money towards the Democratic candidate in places like where I live. We are invisible to them. BUT the GOP loves their "laboratories hidden in plain site," so much so that Karl Rove's superpak ponied up $5,000,000 during the last two weeks of the campaign...a campaign that could not be lost no matter what insane memes were floated.

Well, Krugman does understand this and has written a nice article using what I just wrote about as his launching pad:

Modern movement conservatism, which transformed the G.O.P. from the moderate party of Dwight Eisenhower into the radical right-wing organization we see today, was largely born in California. The Golden State, even more than the South, created today’s religious conservatism; it elected Ronald Reagan governor; it’s where the tax revolt of the 1970s began. But that was then. In the decades since, the state has grown ever more liberal, thanks in large part to an ever-growing nonwhite share of the electorate.

Ignorance is bliss only for the ignorant. The rest of us must suffer the consequences.
