recently saw a prominent endocrinologist in NJ who refused private insurance, but was happy with the Medicare. We've never encountered any physician in this area who refuses Medicare.  The longer one is on Medicare, the more one sees what rubbish private insurance is.

    •  Wow. No doctors who refuse Medicare? (0+ / 0-)

I, on the other hand, will be losing my primary physician of 20 years because the practice he's part of doesn't participate in Medicare any more.  It makes me sad.

I also see an orthopedic surgeon, who takes Medicare.  Another doctor told me that among specialists who rely a lot on hospitals (like an orthopedic surgeon), 90 percent take Medicare, because the hospitals are dependent on Medicare and want doctors with priveleges there to take it.  Doctors who primarily have an office practice find Medicare increasingly burdensome because of the lower prices it pays and the bureaucratic hassle and excessive paperwork.

Don't get me wrong -- I love having Medicare in my (fairly near) future.  But now, when I hear Democrats describe some change in Medicare and say that it's okay because no benefits will be cut, just the money paid to providers -- I have more questions.  Not all providers are the same.  A primary care practice is not the same as a Big Pharma company raking in billions.  Etc.  We need to keep the system functioning well for direct care providers as well as patients; their welfare is very linked.
