called The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko, a part-time GC boatman and Outside Magazine editor. It turns out I had part of the story wrong. They weren't releasing water as an experiment but rather, to keep the water from over-topping the dam! There was a huge snow melt that year and Lake Foul was filled to over-flowing (try and envision that if you've seen the lake levels recently). In addition to the speed record, it resulted in one of the largest NPS rescue efforts on the river in history due to the very high and fast water's effect on the boat trips. I'm looking forward to reading it.
