I've been involved in a discussion on this very topic on FB in private messages with a conservative evangelical friend regarding same sex marriage.

It started simply enough -- I posited that using the Bible as a justification to fight same sex marriage was not logical given that people don't follow the Bible to the letter anyway. I gave the specific example of Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (I highly recommend you read it and use it in discussions).

I then used a systematic approach of explaining that the favorite passages used by Christians from Paul have one really big problem and another slightly smaller problem.

Big Problem: The historical context around what he was writing (hint: it was to specific events happening at the time and not some long term blueprint necessarily).

Smaller Problem: Paul was coming up with these ideas on his own and didn't take them from anything Jesus said.

He then brought up some stuff from John attributed to Jesus, but I had to point out what an outlier John is and that most who study the Bible from a historical perspective agree that John is not a good reference on any historical accuracy with regards to Jesus.

There's more, but I would have to write a diary to explain it all.

But the right question is -- should Liberals use facts to contextualize the Bible in a manner that explains how it does or doesn't factor into their decision making? And to that I think the answer is yes. Provided it isn't an attempt to just dismiss it harshly.
