  •  That's really good to know. The crappy guard comes (5+ / 0-)

off tomorrow! I haven't seen any black snakes around here, so off it comes. Thanks for the input - I appreciate it.

Yeah, the post is fine, but the guard was not going to work out well. Now to see if the Bluebird I saw about 3 weeks ago is still around. With the weather warming up the next several days, I'm hopeful.

    •  Just to be clear, I'm not saying that the guards (4+ / 0-)

are necessarily bad, they may help with certain predators like raccoons, weasels, or mink, but the biggest problem I've had here are black snakes, and I believe that the metal posts are better at deterring all of the above. But you noticed I said, "I think". I could be wrong, but as far as I know I haven't had any bluebird houses that are mounted on steel posts hit by any kind of predator.

I hope you get bluebirds in your house. I don't know about the whole state but I get up to the southeastern corner of Iowa once or twice a year and there is a pretty stable population of bluebirds in that area.

      •  We first saw them here last year. Two fledglings (4+ / 0-)

were sitting on our deck railing and the parents were feeding them. This was probably August. I thought they migrated, but we saw one in February - looking petty cold and miserable - again on the deck rail. So I'm good without a guard. Actually, I thought it would be hard for a raccoon to climb a metal post. I guess we'll just see. We do have mink down by our pond, but that's a good 500' away. Tomorrow the guard comes down.
