  •  For example, "traditional marriage" - feh! (7+ / 0-)

Abraham had sons by his wife and his concubine - Solomon had wives and concubines by the scores - David sends his general off to get killed so he can shtup the general's wife. I could go on and on.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? . . . and respect the dignity of every human being.

      •  Temple prostitution is a very interesting twist. (3+ / 0-)

It reflects the primitive awe of the early farmers at how amazingly, stunningly fertile land could be - and how vulnerable to natural forces such as storms and drought the farmer was. Michener's The Source has a very vivid description of this.

How temple prostitution worked varied. Pretty clearly it was more mainstream than prostitution today, which mostly hits runaways, the sexually abused, and drug addicts. Back then many women did it, and in some places all women had to offer their virginity to the temple. In those cases, the young women were arrayed outside the temple and men took their pick. It was horribly humiliating if you were the plain woman who was left to wait for weeks and months. I just find it hard to really think that the women found it uplifting, but maybe things were really that different then.

Some temple prostitutes were war captives. I suppose it beats silver mining.

    •  There's a good Betty Bowers video about it. (0+ / 0-)

Someone posted it in the last few days, but I can't recall under which diary.

    •  The story of Abraham is a good illustration (0+ / 0-)

His sister Sarai becomes his common law wife.

As they travel together she goes with other men with the consequence that Abraham is welcome where he might otherwise have difficulties being accepted. Abraham uses Sarai's handmaiden as a second wife with whom he sires a child. Sarai is visited by strangers in her tent and then conceives.

Abrahams brother Lot has a house in Sodom whose daughters he sends out to entertain visitors.

In Canaan where single men work hard to fell trees, build ships, mine and smelt ores, and were agricultural workers and mercenary soldiers, prostitution seems to have been about as common as it was in the old west where a similarly pragmatic moral compass held sway.
