  •  I see a lot of those seniors (36+ / 0-)

Many elderly patients I see, especially women, are very concerned about even one more cheap generic pill I want them to take, because they don't know where they'll find that $4 a month I'm asking them to spend.

If Democrats don't turn on their president and slam his Social Security not-even-a-slash down his throat, they're going to get creamed in 2014 by those who'll engineer even deeper cuts.  Obama isn't listening to his base, and if he doesn't get a clear message from Congressional Dems that he'll be entirely on his own in pushing this cut it'll go through and we'll have a Republican senate to go along with the Republican House in 2015.  And that'll mean the pain for seniors and disabled vets and the rest of the 99% of us will just be getting started.

    •  BTW, Consumer Reports recently found that CostCo (17+ / 0-)

was the cheapest by far -- we're talking $20 versus $180 -- for many generic medicines compared to CVS, Walgreens, even Target, Walmart or Sams.

So, if there are any CostCos in the area, maybe your older patients could organize regular visits.

Membership is not required to use the pharmacy, either!

Just one idea. My mom lives elsewhere but could easily be one of your elderly patients. We go through these problems (poor coverage, expensive meds, low SS payments) constantly.

      •  I refer people to Costco all the time (4+ / 0-)

Anybody paying cash for a drug who goes anywhere else is crazy.  The drugs on the WalMart/Target $4 a month list aren't bad at the places that match that price, but it's a relatively limited list.  And $4 is still a lot of money for many seniors.

The president should be ashamed of himself for pushing this atrocity.  The strong probability that he of course never will feel ashamed of himself for it tells me yet again that we don't have a natural ally in the White House.

        •  I figured you were well aware, but thought (0+ / 0-)

this might be a good place to mention it, since so many people read these diaries and comments.

The findings were really astounding.  Like 10% or 20% of the price everywhere else.

A great illustration of what an enormous rip-off our medication system is in this country.

This has gone on so long, I'm becoming more radicalized.  I think the government should simply own all the manufacture and distribution of medicines at cost. Or less than cost, actually, depending on cost/treatment analysis for the entire health care picture for the patient.

even though I pay $48/month for Medicare Part D coverage. Costco is substantially cheaper than the price I would pay at an in-network pharmacy using my insurance.

        Pitiful, isn't it?
