  •  Only ignorant right-wing fundamentalist (23+ / 0-)

Christians who read David Barton believe this is a Christian Nation.  It was never intended to be,.  There was a lot of debate about "no religious test" clusue for political offices--and a lot of folks hated it because it allowed people they didn't like (Quakers, Catholics, people who wanted to ban slavery on religious grounds) to run for office.

They did this for sound reasons. Religious wars between Catholics and Protestants and protestant sects against each other, were still horrible memories. The FF wanted to avoid that happening here.  Hence the religious test was included  and later the first amendment. There's also the Tripoli letter which explicitly states that this is NOT a Christian Nation.

There is NO mention of Jesus, God, Christ, or Christianity in the constitution--and the vague mention of a Creator  in the Declaration is very definitely a Deist Creator, not a CHristian one.

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.

    •  The Treaty of Tripoli needs to be taught (21+ / 0-)

in every history class. When the founders clearly stated that America was not a Christian nation. That treaty, ratified by the Congress, and signed into law by that "crazy Commie" George Washington states

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Mohammedan] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
We can argue to the cows come home (and go out the next morning) but if the founders themselves thought it worth clearly stating this isn't a nation founded on Christianity then anyone who still thinks it is must not be a "real American". Oh, and if they think Christ wants them to control the government they're not "real Christians" either. Double fail time.

You can't assassinate the character of any of modern conservative. You'd have to find where it was buried, dig it up, resurrect it, then kill it. And killing a zombie isn't really assassination, is it?
