  •  Very nice.. in the middle of crazy conservatism (3+ / 0-)

It's good to remember just how bad (bat-manure crazy) that Southern Arizona has been, at times.
In Douglas, 27 miles away,  the 'Sister City' to Bisbee.. once bragged that they had 'turned away the Hippies" from the town in the late sixties.  This was pointed out as a point of pride in the town, for years.

Also remember that in 1976, the Hanigans, local Douglas/ Bisbee ranchers were convicted for kidnapping and torturing three Mexican men that were on their land. The big surprise was that the Hanigans were convicted.

A lot has changed, since then.
Sometimes, it's been for the better.

I myself, went to Catholic school in Douglas, and have very fond memories of Bisbee.

Good for the artists, and GLBT community... a small pocket of sanity in the craziness of Arizona politics.

    •  Poor Douglas is kind of a ghost of it's old self (0+ / 0-)

Thankfully, the Gadsen Hotel still seems to be okay, nice landmark hotel.  Those hippies have done quite a lot to fix up and preserve Bisbee.  We're not exactly thriving here, but things just keep getting slowly better.

One of the houses I grew up in... on 9th street.. is abandoned and boarded up.

They still had the 'Three Cultures' billboards around, last I saw...

BUT... as you left town, there was a billboard that read,

"Pray for Douglas ... Miracles CAN happen!"

Don't know if it's still there.  Smiles.
