  •  other way around---they've lost badly so they (6+ / 0-)

have no choice but to try to resort to extreme measures.

99% of these measures won't go anywhere.    The 1% that do will, unfortunately hurt some people (like North Dakota's abortion law) but in the grand scheme of things you're looking at something akin to a cornered rat.

    •  I agree. My take is that this is (3+ / 0-)

a last gasp effort of the really crazies in the face of certain defeat on a host of social issues.

      That is my hope anyway.

      with a cornered Rat immediately!!!

    •  Yeah, but why is it that its ok (5+ / 0-)

When its only women and minorities and the poor who get savagely bitten by these rats?  At what point do democrats rise up and put the rats out of our misery?  Electorally speaking, of course!

    •  Actually it's the opposite. This is the first (12+ / 0-)

time in about a 100 years that the GOP has had unlimited power in NC.  They own the Governor, both houses and the judiciary.  This isn't about losing.  This is about showing the Democrats and the "liberals" how much power they have.  They don't care ultimately that some of their stuff may be shut down.  They have made it clear this is about "payback"--meaning years of being the minority party and having to stand by and watch progressive things happen in NC.

The GOP doesn't feel cornered in NC.  They redistricted democrats into oblivion after 2010.  And they are going to use all of their power (which is limitless right now as far as legislation goes) to take NC back to the last time that the GOP had control.

Anyone who is dismissive of these guys does so at their peril.  They aren't going anywhere if they can help it and they use social issues to get the kind of support they want.  NC is a perfect example of why no matter how imperfect they are, Democrats are not the same as Republicans

      •  I'm talking nationwide--there will be local/state/ (0+ / 0-)

regional losses.  While these social issues maybe winning positions at these levels--that's temporary as the demographics change (and, to be blunt, as the old guard begins to die off)

Is it too long to wait?  Of course it is.  But these GOP 'victories' are just temporarily masking a much more seismically active demographic than they're aware of.

there will be pendulum swings at all levels, but the lunatics aren't winning.

        •  I agree in theory. But it's hard knowing so many (1+ / 0-)

people around you are going to be hurt while we wait for that to happen. I also worry because I'm not totally convinced on the demographics. At least not in the south. There are lots of young angry white men here too.  The racist at CPAC was was from NC.
