    ...And exceedingly dangerous.  

    The primary thing that keeps the populace in line and cooperating with law and the State in general is, well, consent to be governed.  Part of -that- comes from the supposed (and now betrayed) egality of the Rule of Law -- that it applies to all equally, high and low.  Now, that's never been truly the case, but nowadays it's more false than ever.

    When the State loses the consent of the governed, the only way to keep the populace in line is with force, and that's not sustainable in a country of this size and with this kind of land-area.  And this level of public armament.

    Personally, I would say that this is -- literally -- the biggest threat to the Union since the civil war.  We haven't gotten there yet -- not quite -- but all signs point to the fact that we're walking down that road again.
