Texas Republicans will tell you that the bills they pass in the state legislature to give enormous tax breaks to the fossil fuel industry is for the good of all the state's citizens because those tax breaks encourage extraction industries to come to Texas, spend their money, create jobs and pay [some] taxes.

They would rationalize their laws on abortion, homosexuality, voter and science suppression (and many other subjects) to the citizens the same way, i.e., "It's in your best interest" or "It's upholding moral/traditional values."

But bear83 has told you the truth - it's all about money and power, which, in American politics, are the same thing.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H. L. Mencken
