  •  Mental Illness has a range, if you are speaking of (0+ / 0-)

bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, you are correct but what about people with depression, they may not be dangerous to anyone else but they are dangerous to themselves, people that live in such fear that with a gun they might shoot anything that moves, people with anger issues or control issues.  Many people do not become criminals until they just make a mistake and a gun is handy.  Things that would be crimes in the rational world, we ignore because of our gun culture.  The killer in the Trayvon Martin case was not a criminal until the FL law and a gun ruined both his life and that of Trayvon Martin.

People are diagnosed with mental illness every day, just like other diseases, they have symptoms and treatments and outcomes.
For example, someone who may be depressed is not the same as someone who is diagnosed with clinical depression or post partum depression.
Similarly, someone who is afraid all the time might need counseling but doesn't neccessarily have a mental illness. They just might watch too much Fox News.
As for the murderer of Trayvon Martin, what we see there is someone emboldened by having a gun on him. He feels bold, but acts stupidly (h/t David Waldman):

This gets gun owners in trouble ALL the time, but it isn't mental illness.

      •  You don't think this amount of rage represents (0+ / 0-)

a clear need for counseling,  therapy or possibly medication, you have to be kidding, right.

        •  I would bet he (0+ / 0-)

does need counseling, but he's not mentally ill.
I'm sure he'll get it after he was arrested for this incident.
