    This proposal is the opposite of what we should be doing to reduce unemployment.

    Think about it: suppose we changed to law to require time-and-a-half overtime pay to kick in at 30 hours a week instead of 40. The effect of that would be for more employers to stop working their existing employees overtime, and instead to hire more people.

    Now of course that would drive down earnings for those who are already working; but they still would not suffer as much as those with no work. A worthwhile deal.

    This GOP proposal, if adopted, would have the opposite effect: it would encourage employers to use existing workers more, instead of hiring more workers.

    Typical of the GOP: the status quo ain't bad enough--gotta make it worse.
