the backlash would have been quick and fierce, and the gop would have caved, just as they did under gingrich.

Today's GOP is far more radicalized and reckless than the GOP of Gingrich. Not to mention that Gingrich sacrificed a tremendous amount of power in D.C. by appearing to capitulate to Clinton. After all, Roger Ailes' cited the media coverage of the government shutdown as the impetus for starting Faux News, and to ensure, quote "nothing like that ever happened again".

and it would have made for quite the fun political dynamic, heading into an election year.

        •  Political strategy around national disasters (0+ / 0-)

We'll never know if that course of action would have worked. But forgive me for being cautious and for my inclination to trust the professionals when dealing with the Tea Party around the National default. These are people who don't believe in reality, after all.

            •  Um, the goal was to renew most of the Bush tax cut (0+ / 0-)

That's what those professionals campaigned on, and won. After all, higher taxes are austerity too, and tax cuts are (poorly, but technically) stimulative. Don't forget that.

I really don't know whether the cost to the economy from a shutdown, or heavens' forbid a default, would have outweighed the sequester.

              •  um (0+ / 0-)

no. he campaigned on ending the tax cuts above 250k. specifically.

                •  The difference between $400k and $250k (0+ / 0-)

It's not even worth arguing about.

                  •  given that he's talking about chained cpi (0+ / 0-)

and medicare cuts, it actually is.

I expect a  better analysis from you. You know the difference between $400k and $250k is negligible, and not worth quibbling over.

You also know it's debatable as to how much support there was for $250+k in the Senate. Schumer, in particular, could have been an obstacle, simply because $250k in the New York Metro is very different than other areas of the Country. So no, it has nothing to do with Chained CPI or whatever.

If Obama let all the Bush tax cuts expire, you probably would have gotten $400k, or something close to it in the end, and the sequester.

                      •  yeah (0+ / 0-)

15-20 billion a year is negligible. particularly when that 15-20 billion a year will have to be compensated for, with spending cuts.
