  •  Well, that's sort of good, but this is bad for (6+ / 0-)

    democracy.

When Billionaires are allowed to throw their fortunes around to influence public policy, it threatens democracy.

Think of all the billionaires who are trying to influence so-called "school reform".

It would be better to tax the crap out of these people, then allocate the money, through the democratic process, for the public good.

    •  I understand. It's Citizen United. (15+ / 0-)

But it is unlikely for the foreseeable future that such taxation policies will be adopted.  So I think having "our own billionaires' on some issues helps on immediate issues.

Long term, a new court has to overturn Citizen United.  That will not happen until one of the conservative majority passes on or resigns, which could be a decade or more.

Until then, this is our playing field.

Carnegie built libraries, which was good, but got the money, at least in part, by not paying good wages to workers.  We see huge concentrations of wealth nowadays that I believe are problematic for a number of reasons.  In that owrld, the Gates, Soros's, Buffetts, and this guy are better than the Koch Brothers.
