    I was a young man then and was her primary care giver.

    I won't say that I know what you went through, because all I have learned by the experience is that you can never fully explain what actually happened.

    Probably the best writing I ever did was involved with all those things, but I could never really really touch the place where it lived in me and that best writing made me feel like a failure, because we cannot keep our love forever, and love itself must always, despite our best exertions, end in the unendurable that we must nonetheless endure.

    But there is no nobler thing to do than to love.

    I wish I could find some eloquent thing to say to you, my friend, other than to congratulate you on having loved someone so much as to face this pain.

    Deepest condolences.
