  •  Its a complex way to play, but I'm thinking that (0+ / 0-)

if Schumer were considering his options, he'd go ahead and take the Committee. That may actually be the perfect perch from which to mount an aggressive play for Majority Leader should that day come.

But right now, there is Harry Reid and there is Dick Durbin. Now nobody is going to force Harry Reid out. That's not going to happen. If he leaves, itll be under his own power. And he doesn't have to leave for at least 4 more years. So Schumer has at least a 4 year wait.

But, he could challenge Dick Durbin for the post of whip, at which Durbin has mostly sucked. Taking the whip job would position him for Majority Leader very well. Especially combined with his fundraising prowess. But he wont be able to challenge Durbin for that position until early 2015, and Durbin has his own reelection to worry about.

So if I'm Chuck Schumer, I think the best possible move at the moment is to signal that I want the committee for now and then at 2015, change up and go after Durbin.

    That would be my move.
