  •  After a bad divorce and (3+ / 0-)

the crash of the economy, i was forced to sell my beloved homestead or lose her to Countrywide.

In losing that land- the antique apple orchard that i planted, finding the best tasting varieties from Trees of Antiquity and Fedco, the blueberries and raspberries, the fabulous pears and peaches- i have lost the desired focus and the rhythm of my life.

It is a loss akin to losing a great love, in some ways.
A great crushing loss for one who loved that land and that life more than any of the previously taken roads.

Standing in the garden early one morning, contemplating the potato beetles eating my plants to the ground, a most beautiful canine came tearing out of the woods, hot on the trail of a European hare.
He, blonde and long legged, didn't notice me until i cleared my throat in his direction. He looked straight at me for a frozen 2 seconds, turned and wheeled off on the same path, denied his breakfast. Coyotes are not usually so beautiful but this alpha male was a prize winner.

I garden now in a community plot and dream of another piece of land, a piece of land that wouldn't mind a few fruit trees and a most grateful servant.

'A scarlet tanager broke the silence with his song. She thought of the bird hidden in the leaves somewhere, unseen but nevertheless brilliant red. Nevertheless beautiful.' Barbara Kingsolver/ Prodigal Summer
