    I live 90 miles south of Columbus, and get up there every now and then. I see them up there more frequently than down here on the Ohio River.

    Down here we see ring-bills fairly often, and sometimes Bonaparte's gulls. Those are usually in their winter plumage, but sometimes they're here late enough in the spring to be wearing their dark hoods.

    I was up at Metzger Marsh on Lake Erie on a day in May and saw a herring gull land near a couple of ring-bills. When you're only seeing one species of white-headed gull it can be hard to tell what they are, but when you see herring and ring-billed together the size difference is obvious.
