I have just under 100 IT people working for me in North America and not a one of them is an H1-B.
We have three programmers out of that group, the rest are Field Services, Server support, etc...

We advertise for help in offices when we have turnover and you should see the resumes we get - either absolutely no relevant experience or someone looking for $100K to support 100 desktop users.

How do I  get experience when you don't offer entry level positions?
Majority of us are not looking for $100 thousands, we just want decent pay and opportunity to practice what we learn at school.
The problem is that most employers wanted exact duplicate of the guy that left the position.

      •  That's an age old problem (0+ / 0-)

But we run really lean and I can't get budget to bring in two new guys to replace one veteran and one new guy won't be veteran level quality for two years at least.

In the meantime, I'd have the line of business people yelling at me.

I'm not saying it's fair, it's just what we have to do to keep going with the budgets we're given.

My suggestion would be to do contract and temp work to get the experience if you're not catching on at a firm permanently.  There's plenty of work to do, but businesses only hire permanently when they have no other choice.

      •  Here's the secret. All your competition (6+ / 0-)

lied to get their first gig.

You will get work when you know how the game is played. Guest workers fresh out of garage 6 week  college in India are passed off as senior software developers with years of experience in all the latest technologies of the interview they are going on.

They are coached on the interview process and questions and answers.

It is an art form at this point.
