    this cactus is doing a lot of the weird things my old night blooming cereus used to do in the spring (leaves sprouting off of leaves, weird looking spikes, etc). Looks very familiar.

      mr google will help a lot, it's probably complicated,heh, sorry I can't help out, but the discovery will be interesting for you and me too when I get up later.
      jungle cactus another name, Christmas cactus another cousin...and then there are the three sided plants that look like but may not be Epi's.

      Epiphyllum varieties are a big cottage industry like Iris and orchids...one you have one, you have to have more..and little chunks readily root so pretty soon you'll be like Mickey Mouse and the brooms on Bald Mountain.
