    Like torture was "proven useful" as far as the Bushista regime was concerned?  And the Obama regime, since they've not yet closed Guantanamo (and, as far as we know, maybe not any other prisons that were open during the Bushista years)?

    FBI director Robert Mueller has called national security letters, which do not require a judge's approval or signature, a "proven and useful investigative tool."
    'Scuse me Director Mueller..., but I don't for one single solitary nanosecond believe you unless you can give me a concrete example that I can verify via other means than your say-so.
