  •  While visiting my elderly aunts (14+ / 0-)

in Scotland in the late 90s I was hard put to keep my mouth shut when one of them exclaimed that Maggie Thatcher was "the best thing that had ever happened to Britain."

I guess she really didn't grasp how many of my younger relatives in Scotland were struggling as a result of Thatcher's economic policies.

My father, an avowed liberal, was the political black sheep of the family.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy... the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

    •  Interesting. (6+ / 0-)

I've read Scotland was a hotbed of opposition to her poll tax and one of the things that led to her downfall.

In fact, I read Labour still uses images of Thatcher on their campaign materials in Scotland because she's generally hated there.

"Michael Moore, who was filming a movie about corporate welfare called 'Capitalism: A Love Story,' sought and received incentives."

      •  During Blair's first re-election campaign ... (5+ / 0-)

... Labour put out graphics aimed at the generation that had been hardest hit by Thatcherism that showed then-Tory leader William Hague, notably balding, with Thatcher's hairdo Photoshopped on. The text read: "get out and vote. Or they get back in."

      •  Well, my cousins (0+ / 0-)

feel distinctly different from the way my aunt felt - so I think your perception is accurate.

        My aunt was an outlier.

....who said that, growing up, she thought Thatcher's first name was Goddamn, because her parents were always talking about "Goddamn Thatcher."

Also, my cousins in England refer to her as "That Woman." And refer to her privatization of the rails as "an unmitigated disaster."
