  •  Why does he have to appear to be anything? (13+ / 0-)

Let the Republicans own all the pain and mess that's being caused.

Why does he have to volunteer cuts to social security when he could just sit back?  The House of Representatives is charged by the US Constitution with setting the budget, not the President.  Let them solve their mess.

The "gambit" thing has been debunked, thoroughly in the SS blogroll diaries.  Why does Obama advocate for a cut?  That buys him nothing.  Why doesn't he advocate for better funding?

    His actions speak volumes.

    •  Obama v congress' Repubs (5+ / 0-)

is a central part of the blank screen game you've described.
Even though it's not his role (did bush ever go toe to toe with Pelosi? No.) Obama must be the face of the (D) team in any negotiations, because the visceral hatred of him keeps the right from hearing the actual offers and positions, ensuring their  compliance with the repubs' escalation. It also avoids any inconvenient straying into policy areas the oligarchs dislike (SS income cap discussion, public option, etc etc).
I've been nonplussed by this game since 2010 at least, because it hinges on having the Blank Screen be the face of the D team, thus essentially ceding the entire game at the start.

from Congressional leaders is profoundly undemocratic.

It is destructive to our nation and to open process.  But it is essential for setting up these games and crises so that we'll be faced with the false choice of bad or worse.

We are supposed to feel good about the "bad" because it wasn't "worse."

That set-up couldn't be done this way with Congress acting in the open.  It can only be prepared by operating behind closed doors, coming out of the White House with a "deal" and demanding an immediate vote.

        That's not democracy. At all.
