  •  Well, if that's their choice . . . (5+ / 0-)

Some have suggested that the difference between "chained" cpi and the presently used formula is insignificant. That makes the eagerness to switch all the more bewildering.

Personally, when I begin drawing SS benefits, the difference will not have a huge impact. I will be fortunate enough to have other revenue streams. I can't, and won't, ignore the plight of others who have been less lucky. For people who are already living on the edge of poverty a few dollars can become hugely significant.

On more issues than I wish, I have accepted less than ideal positions from our Party leaders. Not this one, though. No way.

    •  The social safety net is the very foundation (5+ / 0-)

of the Democratic Party.  Because there is no real pressing need to change the formulation of the cost of living adjustments (ie, chained CPI) and that any need to strengthen Social Security can be easily attained by other less painful means, the reason for the President putting Social Security changes is based upon something else.  My guess is that by doing this, the President wants to undermine the very foundation of the Democratic Party on purpose.  It moves the party firmly into the hands of the FIRE sector by removing the obstacles to privatization of the social safety net via cut by cut.  It is the same reason why he cut the deal with big Pharma when crafting the ACA and why there was never any intent to provide a public option or open up Medicare to everyone.  The President is firmly in the pockets of the FIRE sector.

What is so distressing to me is how cynical and uncaring he is about hurting our most vulnerable citizens.

      •  I don't know, or frankly much care, what President (0+ / 0-)

Obama's motivations are for this proposal--which, let's not forget isn't a "done deal" by a long ways.

I don't care if he's anguished or elated.

Proud people should not be treated as if their existence is an inconvenience or extravagance, subject to the mood or whims of government workers--including the president.

Social Security is not a gift. Rather it's a piggy-bank, which has been recklessly raided by the well-connected.

We never hesitate to spend money for other, much more dubious, activities (none of us would have any difficulty compiling significant lists).

Returning the investment of those who have funded the SS system hardly seems like a good place to start "economizing."

Rather, I would much prefer, giving the Republican's list of supposed "waste fraud and abuse" a good LONG looking over.
