and the four year old climbed in it and killed his wife?

Would you still want him fired?

But I'm with you, stupid people and crazy people shouldn't have guns. The question is not whether we should ban guns, or ban certain kinds of guns, but how to decide how to keep more dangerous people away from the many different ways they could cause harm to others. It's a tricky issue, personal rights versus public safety, and it deserves a thoughtful, thorough discussion.

But we are not off to a great start; I mean how does banning certain guns prevent anything? Rifles make up something like one percent of gun murders, and here we are focused on magazine sizes that really only apply to rifles. Some want a universal database, as if tracking gun owners at the federal level will magically reduce gun crime. Without laws that deal with the mentally ill, the database makes zero sense. But a database would be necessary if confiscation was the future goal. People aren't this stupid. One third of gun owners are Democrats, you know.

Some people shouldn't be near guns, that seems obvious, right? But you can't get there by banning some or all guns. You might raise the price of illegal guns with bans, but with 300 million guns out there, and the new technology that "3d prints" them, you just aren't going to get rid of guns. If the fact that something can be used to kill other people, even a lot of people, makes it worthy of banning, we have an awful lot of crap we need to ban... buses, gas stations, dams...

We could just try rounding up illegally owned guns, after all, the vast majority of gun crime is caused by criminals who own their guns illegally, but I heard that "stop and frisk" wasn't going over well. Criminals are already banned from owning guns. We should try to enforce the law more. No gun ban will take a single gun away from a single gang member, it will simply leave their prey unarmed, and everyone knows that.

I'm afraid that my signature won't match the mood of my comment.
