  •  Earlier today, I asked a recent Daily Kos arrival (8+ / 0-)

... who only posts about guns to cite an example of where the government (local, state or federal) has confiscated guns. Not threatened to confiscate guns, but actually gone out and proactively confiscated them.

He kept tossing out the old NRA bullshit about California in 1999 and New York City in 1996.

So I kept asking him to provide examples where guns were proactively confiscated.

    Nothing.

Finally, he came back with this gem:

Around 8 p.m. on March 10, 1993, Officer Richard Campi of the Santa Clara Police Department responded to a call of a disturbance or fight at room 127 of the Vagabond Motel.  Officer Campi knocked on the door; defendant opened the door and told the officer unnamed people were threatening and harassing him, including neighbors and voices he had been hearing.

He said he checked into the motel to escape the voices in his head. [footnote 1] The officer was concerned about defendant's mental state and asked him if he had any weapons.  Defendant consented to the officer entering to examine his weapons, including an SKS rifle with a detachable 30-round magazine attached to it, a separate 10- round fixed magazine, a loaded Ruger Black Hawk .45 .caliber revolver, a loaded Colt .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol, 310 rounds of ammunition for the SKS and 100 rounds of .45 caliber pistol ammunition.  Officer Campi  removed the 30-round magazine from the SKS simply by opening the bolt and pulling a latch.  He checked the Penal Code and consulted with his supervisor and the police department armorer, and concluded defendant's rifle was a prohibited assault weapon.

Seriously. This is the sum total of gun confiscation in the U.S. A guy hearing voices who has to check into the Vagabond Motel for fuck's sake.

By the way, I think the poster in question is not long for Daily Kos. He seems to be a reincarnation of another NRA tool who recently got the axe.

      •  That wasn't through any legislation. (1+ / 0-)

That was post-Katrina. And the New Orleans police returned them (after being sued).

        •  1) who gives a shit (0+ / 0-)

and 2) who gives a shit.

Whether it was done through legislation or not is totally irrelevant.

Also irrelevant is whether some of the owners got back, years later, a rusted solid chunk of scrap metal that used to be a gun.  Agreeing to return them is not the same as returning them.

Many of the guns were also destroyed or thrown into the river, although the really nice ones probably ended up in the Captain's personal collection.

          That was post-Katrina.
Oh, well that makes everything OK then.

            •  I don't own any guns. (0+ / 0-)

              Never needed any.

Confiscation is not the issue, at least not in the next fifty years.  Beyond fifty years it might be very much the issue.

This, I believe, is the crux:

'These tragedies must end, and to end them we must change'
Someone who doesn't want change in general certainly does not want to change who he is.  I think President Obama has found exactly what some people do not want.

              •  This thread was about legislative confiscation. (0+ / 0-)

You changed the subject. Then you act like you can;t understand what you did. Thanks for jumping in late.

Perhaps you meant that much, much more narrowly than it sounds.

And I think you're missing the point of the New Orleans story.  Guns were confiscated precisely in order to make it harder for their owners to resist forcible relocation.  That's not a conspiracy theory, that's the New York Times.

This thread was about registering weapons. The New Orleans case was not about weapons that had been registered. It was haphazard and random.

Go back and reread the thread.

Are you against registration because it would lead to confiscation?
