  •  Excellent show. Third season delves deeper... (7+ / 0-)

...into the hierarchy of crime.  Boyd, Ava and his gang may seem like hardcore thugs, but as we learned at the end of the season, ultimately they are beholden to someone.  And that someone is the wealthy and politically connected of Harlan County, those who live on Clover Hill.

The Clover Hill residents are neatly juxtaposed against the "Hill people" - what outsiders would call the "Hillbillys" of Appalachia.  Both groups are insular, isolated from the rest of the world, and distrustful of outsiders.

Ultimately, Boyd and Ava learn that no matter how rich they become, no matter how powerful, they will never be accepted as legitimate in Clover Hill.  Everything they do and accumulate is merely a facade;  they will never be able to transcend their class to enter another.  They will always serve their political and economic masters.
