The weasels will get the message.  And so will up and coming local and state politicians who are thinking about moving up to the federal level.  Money still talks, so let's hand it a microphone.

hesitant ones that we won't vote for them again if they support any cut to SS of any kind.

But we also need to frame Obama's failure as an error that the party rejected.  We don't need to preach to the world that Obama ia as bad as Republicans, etc.  It's clear to me he's not; think GWB and CHeney. But whatever your opinion on that, he is the person most associated with the Democratic party in the eyes of the nation.  If Senators and Congressmen/women are smart, they'll frame this as Obama going too far in seeking compromise BECAUSE Republican obstruction is hurting the country so badly, undermining economic recovery, keeping us from building up more jobs, etc.  When he bent too far in seeking compromise, the party stopped him, because defending Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid is one of the core positions of the Democratic party, and can't be up for negotiation.

In this situation, to defend the Democratic party and avoid losses in 2014, we need to emphasize the commitment of the party to the social safety net, not emphasize the president's bad moves.

This needs to be about holding the Democratic party on course.  Not about expressing anger at Obama.
