Annette F ( I have no feelings about her one way or the other) and Jonathan Winters (a comedic genius at the time) may have been middle America and why does the diarist thinks that's a problem? That's a huge huge group of people to just slap down in a dismissive fashion.
So I totally agree with your assessment.  I have trouble with her take on the Teacher story re: Jews also. I actually read the story and sometimes the best way to teach why an idea (such as a final solution circa 1940's Germany) IS to try to defend it with your hindsight in mind. It is IMHO a valid critical thinking assignment. I feel for the unnamed teacher who may lose her job, trying to get students to think about how hate gets legislated and what to watch out for - particularly creeping rationalizations that make hate legislation possible... It's simplistic thinking to go - 'well they hated those people and that's all the reason they needed.' Because that certainly oversimplifies how a perfectly rational people let this happen to them, with a good object lesson about the camel's nose getting into the tent.

How is this worse than having a student defend an unpopular and incorrect idea in a debating exercise. You have to understand the mindset of the enemy in order to destroy their arguement.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia".
