to pay a state legislator $31,140.90/year.  But I don't know if the highest-paying, most professionalized state legislatures--New York, Pennsylvania, California, and Michigan, according to the NCSL--are really doing the best jobs.  But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea, either, to raise salaries elsewhere, although obviously it might not be the best politics.

    •  I've always found it to be a silly issue (10+ / 0-)

likewise for Congress withholding percentages of their own pay or what have you.  It's all just microscopic drops in the overall budget, and doesn't excuse fiscal irresponsibility elsewhere.  To me, it's kinda like the conservative obsession with cutting things like NPR, as if that in any way makes up for an increase in the military budget.

Basically, I see legislature pay as a complete non-issue.  Just pay them something normal, and not ridiculous, and then move on to real budget issues.

    •  If The Proposed Increase Was 3%..... (3+ / 0-)

they could get away with it.  But an $11,000 a year pay increase in a climate of austerity, deficits, and tax increases is unthinkable tone-deafness.

    •  The problem though... (0+ / 0-)

Is that state legislators are often working at other places (either as attorneys or business owners) which creates massive conflicts of interest. That can be a huge reason why there's so much corruption that happens in state governments.

What many legislatures should do is set much higher wages and require anyone who is elected to the legislature to resign whatever post they have.
