  •  So is Ron Barber a placeholder? (0+ / 0-)

I.E., filling in for Gabby Giffords until the Arizona Dems can find a suitable candidate for that district? Because he seems like an obvious backbencher who just keeps the seat ready.

    •  Doubtful... (0+ / 0-)

I think the only way Giffords gets that seat back is if Barber runs for a higher office. So maybe he is a placeholder but when he is done filling in it will result in him running for another office.

      •  he had such a close call though (0+ / 0-)

I could easily see him losing his seat, not to even get into running for higher office.

      •  Good point (0+ / 0-)

Though I wasn't thinking of Giffords getting the seat back; I was thinking of a Arizona Dem who has Gifford's political style replacing her and Barber. Probably not Mark Kelly (I think he's chosen his path with the gun control lobbyism), but someone similar.

Are there are local Dems who fit the profile of moderate/Blue Dog-ish, yet charismatic like Giffords was/is?

      •  Barber (3+ / 0-)

He doesn't appear to be running for governor, and he'll be 71 on election day 2016 which is very old for a first-time Senate candidate.

Senate is more likely than going back to the House.

      •  That's what I was thinking (0+ / 0-)

Recover from the shooting for the next three years, launch campaign for Senate in early 2016 and either a) take down McCain once and for all (however awesome this would be I think it would require Hillary's coattails) or b) pick up the open seat (probably the easier route). She goes to the Senate and becomes an inspirational figure that shows that a traumatic injury isn't the end, you just have to keep fighting, and she secures her place in history (if she doesn't already have one).
