  •  From when the bombs went off (23+ / 0-)

until dinnertime,  we sat there and stared, and wondered how much more our generation would have to take.  A selfish viewpoint, yes, but one that Mr. escapee and I share.  We are getting old enough to not know what to do anymore.

And then the phone rang.  My nephew, my poor drug boy nephew, has been missing for a little while.  He was found by the police wandering stoned down a rural road, his feet infected and swollen.  He's been on the street, and he's been with 'some people' who tossed him out.  We know where he is now; he's in jail on previous warrants.

My bright, blonde, happy nephew, who hurt his back when he was 16 and was put on Oxycontin by some doctor, and nobody noticed that he never came off it.

He's on heroin now, and it's probably the same bitter story millions of American kids go through.  Except I love this one.

So all in all it was a shitty day.  Big blocks of my inner life got shattered.  Once in the 90s, in Boston for a convention, I stood in the finish line area long after the winners passed, and watched runners come in, get stuck with IVs, wrapped in silver blankets, kiss the finish line.  It was sunny and cold and wonderful.  That's gone, and I wonder about the Philly marathon on the 5th, and the Flower Market, and anyplace people come together.

And Drug Boy and his distraught mother, and if anything will ever be the same in what I might as well call my family now, not the in-laws.
