    perhaps the greatest event in non-pro sport outside of the Olympics. That's why.

    Here's what I said last night:

    Patriots Day is really the highest civic festival in Boston, with the possible exception of St Patrick's Day, in the Boston area. From the early morning cannon blast from the North Bridge in Concord (I used to live down the street and it rattled my windows) and the re-enactments in Lexington and many other things in surrounding towns to the Marathon and the many visitors who make the pilgrimage to this first feast of Spring, it seems the whole state is somehow involved. The Bostonians are even nice to one another, it seems. And if you don't care for the marathon much, the Sox are playing at home. It's a really big deal for some people, Patriots Day.

    If this incident was intentional, it was a particularly cruel and sadistic time to do it.
