    European nations have a social safety net far beyond ours, but they rely on VAT more than income tax.

    VAT is just a glorified sales tax.

      Most countries I've visited that had a vat tax set the rate around 20%. Now imagine if everything went up in price by twenty percent with it all going to the government. It produces giant sums. In addition those countries tend to have higher income taxes than ours, or at least similar effective rates.

        I had it in my head that the VAT substituted for income taxes, but I guess that was just the selling point.  Reality seems to be that it was just added in on top.
