    From the very beginning, the reports were that most of the injuries, and the most serious injuries, are to lower legs (all the way up to and including amputations).

    It struck me immediately that the nature of the blasts may very well have been intended. Inflicting massive leg injuries at a premier running event seems more likely to be a calculated effort to cause maximum human misery rather than a coincidence of unskilled IED construction.

      sophistication to get the angle right.  In a case like this, where a bomb is left in a crowded area, like a trash can, it is probably a simple explosive packed with shrapnel, like the IRA used in London back in the 1980s.  

      I hate to say it, but I've seen worse carnage, but that was caused by a US air strike on an Iraqi convoy in the Gulf War that I still have nightmares about.

        and still have nightmares, and that was a long, long time ago.  People's willingness to do harm to one another for the sake of a cause or belief system never ceases to sicken me.
