    If someone had access to Claymore mines, they would have been in a position to do even more damage.  I don't think they'd try to shoot to maim; if the blast had directed higher it would have killed more people, and if the perp put buckshot or shrapnel or whatever in it, a blast that focused higher would have killed more people.  And military weapons (with a few exceptions) don't make big movie style flashes, unless it's on a Hollywood set and is wielded by the likes of Bruce Willis.  Home made explosives such as black powder do.

    To be honest, it seems like the kind of bomb someone who had downloaded bomb-building instructions on the internet would build.

    That's important: Both Al Queda and the first string of American right wing domestic terrorists have access to more lethal explosives.

      If they had a claymore and a bunch of gunpowder or aluminum powder or whatever, they would have thrown in the powder also.
