    ...candidate making the race more of a referendum on McConnell himself. Which is what he and his inner circle have tried successfully to avoid in each and every re-election. If Marksberry is the person who Kentucky Democrats can rally around to pull that off, more power to him.

    I suspect that Ms. Judd came to terms with that when she decided in the end not to make the race herself. And I suspect that SoS Grimes will come to a similar conclusion, even as the Establishment wing of our Party will attempt to convince her that they will match McConnell "dollar for dollar." Such promises are only good for as long as the seas are calm and the wind fair.

    If the race is seen as a referendum on McConnell by early October of 2014, he'll be endangered. And endangered is enough to them to commit a glaring unforced error. Timing will be everything on this race.
