when people bad mouth first responders retirement pay.

First of all, it is decided by negotiation, not by fiat of the employees. Get involved in the process if you want to drive out qualified employees by shorting them on their retirement, not cry after the fact.

Secondly--do people shoot at you while you do your job? People do shoot at ambulances & Paramedics. When you come into work in the morning, and your ambulance has new bullet holes and you learn the person you turned the vehicle over to the night before had surgery to remove a bullet from them, well, suffice to say you may reconsider your career choice... Are you exposed to contagious diseases as a matter of course in your job? I was a Paramedic in San Francisco when it was unknown how AIDS was spread. I went to work not knowing if I woud die very young because I developed AIDS because of my job. Is it the same for you? Do you routinely get physically attacked on your job? I did many times, and so did every Paramedic I know. Have you had surgeries because of crap other people did to you at your job? PLENTY of Paramedics I know had neck surgery, back surgery, knee surgery, high BP, lung problems from crap they inhaled on the job...Do you risk your health daily at your job? Is your lifespan shortened because of your job?

And for what it is worth, my retirement pay is NO WHERE CLOSE to $100k/year. OR $90k. Or $75k, or even $60k.

You get what you pay for. If you want some yokel who is in over their head, by all means pay them $18k/yr and let them live on SS after they can barely function because they can no longer lift more than 20lbs. But if you want the best and the brightest, the most physically fit, the most compassionate, the caring, the calm in the face of their own death--well, that is gonna cost you more.

The better I know people, the more I like my dog.
