  •  They have never paid Corps for Summer Institute (0+ / 0-)

I'm not sure how anyone would get that impression, other than pure wishful thinking and bad reading. Disclosure: I am a TFA alum, Corps Year 1995. The scope of the operations has changed (multiple Institute sites) but the basic operation, in my understanding, has not. I have many criticisms of their operations, but this one is not high on the list. I will explain why (not).

As a Corps Member, you are never actually TFA's employee, unless you work for them later, say, 'teaching' at a subsequent Summer Institute.  You are hired, and begin to get paid, by the school district you are placed in. In other words, like most schoolteachers, you wait for that first mid-September paycheck with bated breath. Essentially, they are a training and placement agency, which follows up with some generally-very-limited professional development.

TFA provides dorm housing, food, and evidently some sort of transportation allowance (that's new) at Institute, but no, they don't cut a check for 5 weeks of training, and never have. Is it indentured servitude? Not remotely, considering what you would pay to a real university for the degree/certification and whatever concomitant training you would get. It's actually a hell of a deal, given that most teaching certs require at least a 5th year of college, and often unpaid student-teaching.  That's a cool $8,000 or more at your avg. State university, more at a private college. So a month free room and board with a guaranteed job at the end is not a bad deal.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I'm sorry that this person or these persons felt misled, but there are 20+ years' worth of alums out there, none of whom got paid for Institute, who could point out the realities of the deal.

My budget-cutting plan: anyone showing up to a government worksite with Confederate images on their truck, gets paid in Confederate dollars.
